Caption: Crater lake in Mount Pinatubo. View of a hot acidic lake within the caldera (large crater) of Mount Pinatubo, a volcano in the Philippines. A growing cone of ash can be seen in the centre of the lake at bottom left. Several fumaroles, vents which release steam and gases, are also seen. Pinatubo is 1600 metres tall, although it lost about 500 metres during its eruption in June 1991. Pinatubo's history is based around long periods of dormancy during which it grows slowly, followed by a short destructive explosion which destroys much of the growth. Photographed in March 1993.
