Caption: Stromboli volcano erupting. Night view of lava being thrown from the volcano Stromboli, on the Italian island of the same name. Stromboli volcano has been in constant eruption for over 2000 years, and has acquired the name "lighthouse of the Mediterranean" because of the regularity of its eruptions. Clots of liquid lava are thrown out in distinct explosions which vary in frequency from every few seconds to every few hours, depending on the state of the volcano. This type of eruption, regular emissions rather than a catastrophic explosion, is known as Strombolian activity when seen in other volcanoes.
