Caption: Moss spore capsule. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of the closed mouth of a capsule (spore case) of a club moss (Funaria hygrometrica). Mosses reproduce by means of spores (small orange spheres) at certain times during their life cycle. The light brown rays are attached to the edge (not seen) of the capsule's mouth. They open away from the centre (upper left), flinging the spores away as they do so. Each capsule is borne on a spiralling stalk which is coiled up in dry weather, only unrolling in damp conditions. Club moss is common on recently- burned areas and on alkali soils. Magnification: x330 at 6x7cm size. x510 at 4x5"
