Caption: Mount St Helens volcano and dead trees. Mount St Helens erupted in 1980 with a titanic blast that ripped out the north side of the volcano, leaving the large gap seen in the crater wall. The blast devastated a 600-square-kilometre area. Most of the mature trees in the heavily forested area were flattened. The area has yet to fully recover from the blast. Photographed in Washington State, USA, in 2001.
