Caption: Mount Etna erupting. Plumes of smoke issuing from the volcano Mount Etna during its eruption in autumn 2002. The white plumes are smoke from forest fires started by lava flows. Mount Etna occupies the eastern part of the Italian island of Sicily. Etna is the largest and most active volcano in Europe, and stands 3323 metres above sea level. It continuously experiences minor eruptions, but this was on a much larger scale. Numerous earthquakes opened up fissures on its flanks, and lava flowed down its northern and southern sides. Photographed by astronauts on board the International Space Station, 400 kilometres up, on 30th October 2002.
