Caption: Volcanic destruction. This is the Tar River Estate building that has been destroyed by pyroclastic flows from the Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat Island, the Caribbean Sea. Soufriere Hills began erupting in July 1995, its first recorded eruption in historical times. Since then it has been nearly continually active, ejecting material and causing earthquakes. In the autumn of 1997, much of the island's population was evacuated when a major eruption was predicted. Several towns were destroyed by volcanic activity in the following weeks.
