Caption: Lichen on a tree. Lichens is a symbiotic organism, one in which the components are more successful together than they would be apart. /it comprises a fungus and an alga. The fungus is known as a mycobiont. It provides protection and shelter for the alga. In return the alga, known as a photobiont, provides sugars for the fungus through photosynthesis. The fungus collects these by means of specially adapted hyphae called appressoria. Photographed in Estonia.
