Caption: Merapi volcano (2911 metres), Java, Indonesia, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). It is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes and its steam plume is seen being blown to lower left. Only the top of the volcano is seen above stratus clouds (white) blanketing its lower slopes. The peak of Gunung Merbabu (3148 metres, lower right) is around 11 kilometres north of Gunung Merapi. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 24 August 2003.
