Caption: House caught in lava flow. View of a house surrounded by lava from Mount Etna. The lava flow has reached as high as the roof. This house is on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily, and was destroyed in the 1983 eruption of the Ikava vent. Etna's lava is blocky and viscous, so moves slowly enough that the inhabitants were able to escape. Despite the obvious risks, many people inhabit the lower flanks of the volcano to farm its rich, fertile soil.
