Caption: Artist's impression of the Earth during its early stages of development. Soon after its formation, the Earth has cooled slightly and formed a fragile crust. This is still being breached by volcanoes and meteorite impacts. At this time, about 4000 million years ago, the Moon was much closer to the Earth than it is today.
