Caption: Cross polarised light micrograph of a thin section of 'Greywacke', a sedimentary rock composed of variously sized fragments in a generally fine matrix. This is typical of deposited materials which have not been transported far from their source & therefore have had little time to become smooth & round through weathering. The dark oval grain at right of centre consists of a multitude of sutured quartz grains & was weathered from quartzite, a metamorphic rock. Magnification 2.5 at 35mm size. Microcosmos P.139 fig.7.25 Technical info: cross polarised light.
