Caption: Fern rhizome. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through a rhizome of the fern Pteris sp. The outer cortex has strengthened cell walls (red & green); at centre are oval & circular bundles of conducting tissue embedded in a paren- chymatous ground tissue (green). The conducting tissues have large xylem cells or vessels (white) that conduct water, surrounded by phloem (black) that serves to transport nutrients. Two bands of cells with thickened walls (red) act to strengthen and support the rhizome. A rhizome is a thick horizontal underground stem which acts as an agent of vegetative propagation. Magnification: x6 at 35mm size.
