Caption: Chert rock. Hand resting on a sample of rock from the Rhynie chert deposit in Scotland. Chert is a dense, siliceous (silica-rich) rock found in limestone areas. The Rhynie deposit is rich in well-preserved plant and arthropod fossils from the Devonian period (410-355 million years ago). This sample is approximately 396 million years old.
