Caption: Horsetail stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a horsetail, Equisetum sp. The outer edge of the stem is seen darkened (at top); at lower frame are two brown vascular bundles which, with others, form a ring inside the stem and serve to transport food and water through the plant. At centre are white cavities which lie in a ring in the cortex of the stem. Horsetail's (Sphenophyta) are vascular plants resembling a horse's tail, with a hollow jointed stem and scale-like leaves. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size.
