Caption: Peridotite. Polarised light micrograph of a section through peridotite. This is a plutonic rock, one that forms only very deep in the Earth's crust. It is composed largely of olivine and pyroxene. It is thought that much of the mass of the Earth is peridotite, as it forms most of the mantle. Water entering through tiny fractures has led to the formation of seams of serpentine in this specimen.
