Caption: Amethyst crystals, thin section. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section through crystals of amethyst, a variety of quartz. The bands seen here are due to a change in the rate of formation of the crystals. The crystals form as molecules precipitate out of solution, and environmental factors can change the solution's properties. The bands are called phantoms.
