Caption: Soft tree fern. Canopy of a soft tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica. The fern leaves radiate out from the central trunk, shading the forest floor below. Tree ferns are among the most ancient plants on Earth today. They dominated the first forests over 300 million years ago, before flowering plants evolved. Some can reach heights of 20 metres. These plants are common in damp gullies in forests in south-eastern Australia.
