Caption: Silver ribbon. Silver is a soft white transition metal, superior to all other metals as a conductor of heat and electricity. It occurs as the minerals argentite (silver sulphide) and horn silver (silver chloride) and, rarely, in native form. It is also present in ores of lead and copper and is extracted as a by-product of smelting and refining these metals. Silver is widely used for tableware and jewelry and in photographic film, electrical contacts, batteries and brazing (soldering) alloys. The chemical symbol for silver is Ag.
