Caption: Haematite crystal. Haematite (iron oxide) varies in colour from metallic black to dull red. The soft, red, earthy form is known as red ochre. Haematite is a common and widely-distributed mineral occuring in igneous, sedementary and metamorphic rocks. It is the most important ore of iron and has other industrial uses in paint manufacture and polishing compounds. This specimen measures 18 x 25 cm and was found in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
