Caption: A cut and polished crystal of sphalerite (zinc sulphide, usually with iron sulphide impurities). Sphalerite varies in colour from yellow or reddish brown to black, depending on the amount of iron present. It can also be pink, green or colourless. Sphalerite is also known as zinc blende and forms the main ore for zinc. The world's main deposits occur in the USA, Canada, Australia, Austria, Yugoslavia, Italy and Sardinia.
