Caption: Carnelian is a semi-precious stone used widely in jewellery. It is a type of chalcedony, a form of quartz (silicon dioxide). Its brown/yellow colour comes from the inclusion of fine particles of haematite or limonite, both of which are iron oxides. The best stones come from northern South America and India.
