Caption: Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone used widely in jewellery. It is a rock containing the mineral lazurite (sodium calcium aluminium silicate sulphate), which gives it a deep blue colour. Lapis lazuli contains flecks of the golden yellow mineral pyrite (iron sulphide). Lazurite is used as the source of the blue pigment ultramarine. The best specimens of lapis lazuli are found in northern Afghanistan.
