Caption: Peridot gemstones. Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine (magnesium iron silicate), in varying shades of green. It is often confused with emerald, and as such given the common name of the evening emerald. Some emeralds of royal treasures have been shown to actually be peridots. It is found across the globe, although the best specimens come from Pakistan and Myanmar (formerly Burma).
