Caption: Tourmaline gemstones. Tourmalines are a group of closely related minerals, which are prized by mineral collectors. They are unique among gems by being pleochroic, which means that they appear darker when viewed down the long axis of the crystal than from the side. Tourmalines exhibit a wide variety of colours and can be cut and polished into a variety of shapes (as seen).
