Caption: Cinnabar (mercury sulphide) is the most important ore of mercury. Cinnabar deposits drops of the metallic element mercury when heated. It usually occurs in scarlet microcrystalline or earthy masses but occasionally rhombohedral, tabular crystals (as here) are found. It was once used as the mineral pigment vermilion.
