Caption: Goethite stalactites. Goethite is an important iron ore and is a form of iron hydroxide (alpha-FeOOH). It can occur as prismatic crystals or, more usually, in tabular or stalactitic aggregates. Here is it seen in a pinnacle shaped stalactite habitat. It is an important constituent of 'limonite', rocks formed under oxidising conditions at the expense of iron- bearing minerals.
