Caption: Assorted grains of unworked corundum. Corundum is a crystalline aluminium oxide mineral. It is very hard, so used as an abrasive in industry. Clear samples can be cut into ornamental ruby or sapphire stones. The samples here are rounded pebbles, between 6 and 20 millimetres in diameter, that were found in gravel deposits in Sri Lanka.
