Caption: Barite mineral. Barium (pink), a barium sulphate mineral, is a common source of the heavy metal barium. Barium is used widely in the oil, paper and rubber industries, in radiography for barium meals and as an additive for cement. These orthorhombic crystals display a characteristic bladed shape. The dark crystals are the mineral chalcopyrite, a copper-iron sulphide mineral. This sample measures around 200 millimetres across.
