Gypsum and limonite minerals. Limonite (orange) is a field name for various iron oxides and hydroxides. It is found in surface oxidation zones of iron deposits, or as a residue of carbonate and silicate breakdown in tropical conditions. Here, limonite is partially covering the thin crystals of gypsum (clear), a calcium sulphate mineral commonly found in sedimentary rock. Gypsum has a wide range of applications in industry, including for construction materials and food additives. This sample measures 50 x 70 millimetres.
