Caption: Bauxite. Cut and polished section of the aluminium ore bauxite. The cross-section has revealed the concentric rings of deposition. This is a sedimentary rock formed by chemical weathering of a different original sediment under tropical climate conditions. It is composed primarily of aluminium hydroxide minerals, plus various mixtures of silica, iron oxide, titanium, aluminium silicates, and other impurities in minor or trace amounts. It is the main ore for production of aluminium, the most widely used metal apart from iron and its derivatives. This sample is 6.5 centimetres wide.
