Caption: Limestone cave at Makapansgat in the northern Transvaal, South Africa. This group of caves, some 320 kilometres north of Johannesburg, proved a rich source of hominid fossil material. Excavations began in 1945 under the leadership of Phillip Tobias, who was then studying anatomy under Raymond Dart at Witwatersrand University.
