Caption: Fossil skull models. Image 3 of 3. Two models of hominid skulls made by a palaeoanthropologist. Casting models such as this allows the creation of several models that are accurate replicas of the original, allowing it to be studied in several different locations simultaneously. This is a cast of a skull found at La Quina, France. This site has yielded numerous Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) remains. Neanderthals were relatives of modern humans (H. sapiens sapiens), but are not thought to be direct human ancestors. They became extinct around 30,000 years ago. For a sequence showing one of these casts being prepared, see images E436/057-059.
