Caption: Australopithecus. Artwork of a male Australopithecus eating a plant. Australopithecus is an extinct genus of the hominid family. The members of this genus were found in eastern and southern Africa between four and one million years ago. These were ape-like creatures which had a fully erect posture. Australopithecus gracilis was lightly built and omnivorous whilst Australopithecus robustus was heavily built and vegetarian. It is thought that Australopithecus sp. may have evolved into Homo habilis, the fist true human.
