Caption: Tuang child (Australopithecus africanus) skull, side view. The Tuang child fossil was discovered in 1924 in Tuang, South Africa. The child, an example of A. africanus, is believed to have been about 3 years old at the time of its death. A. africanus was a bipedal ape living in Africa 3-2 million years ago. The skull is similar to that of a chimpanzee, although A. africanus had more human-like teeth and a slightly larger brain capacity.
