Caption: Cobalt, a light grey, ferromagnetic transition metal. It is present in the minerals cobaltite, smaltite and erythrite and is also found in association with copper and nickel ores. Cobalt is used in magnetic alloys such as Alnico, in stainless steels and in high-strength alloys resistant to oxidation at high temperatures (used for tubine blades & cutting tools etc.). The artificially-produced isotope Cobalt-60 is used in medicine as a radioactive tracer and in the treatment of cancer. Cobalt was discovered by G. Brandt in 1737 and has the chemical symbol Co.
