Caption: Iron, a malleable, ductile transition metal widely used in construction and engineering. A newly-cut iron surface is silvery-white in colour, but soon oxidises in moist air. The surface of this sample is probably coated with iron II oxide (black) and (hydrated) iron III oxide (rust). The main iron ores are haematite, magnetite, limonite, ilmenite, siderite and pyrite. The ores are smelted in a blast furnace to give impure pig iron, which is further processed to give cast and wrought iron or alloyed with carbon to form various steels. Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It was discovered in prehistoric times and has the chemical symbol Fe.
