Caption: Cyrtomium fern sorus. Light micrograph of a section through a sorus from a Cyrtomium sp. fern. A sorus is a spore-producing region on the underside of a fern frond. The body of the frond runs across upper centre. The sorus is the umbrella-like cover (indusium, purple) on the underside of the frond. The indusium protects the developing spores (round, blue), and when they are mature it degenerates, allowing them to be released. Magnification: x42 when printed 10cm wide.
