Caption: Huldremose Woman. Mummified head and torso of the Huldremose Woman, a "bog body" dated 160 BC to 340 AD. This body of an adult woman was discovered in 1879 in a bog near Ramten, Denmark. It was found with clothing including two skin capes, a woollen skirt, woollen scarf, woollen headband and a horn comb. Huldremose Woman met a violent end in which her limbs were hacked and her right arm completely cut off. Many ancient bodies have been found in the bogs of northwest Europe. Many met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice. Low temperature and oxygen, and high tannins in bog waters led to the mummification.
