Caption: Windeby Girl. Mummified head and torso of Windeby Girl, a "bog body" dated to the Roman Iron Age. This girl aged about 14 years was found in 1952 in a bog near Windeby, Germany. Her body was thin and undernourished, and the left half of her hair cropped. A blindfold was tied over her eyes, yet no trace was found of a violent death. She was buried in a pit in the bog with a large birch branch in her right arm. Many ancient bog bodies of northwest Europe met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice. Low temperature and oxygen, and high tannins in bog waters led to the mummification.
