Caption: Bog body excavation. Unidentified "bog body" lies at its excavation site in a bog near Frederignose, Denmark, in 1896. Archaeologists have unearthed many mummified and well-preserved bog bodies dated to the Roman Iron Age in the bogs of northwest Europe. Many of these ancient bodies met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice. Low temperature and oxygen, and high tannins in bog waters led to the mummification.
