Caption: Light micrograph of a specimen of petrified wood from Arizona, USA. Areas of the cellular structure (grain) of the wood have been invaded and replaced by silica to form a rock replica of the original wood. Other minerals surround the petrified wood; the bright red area is agate. The specimen, a polished block 1cm in thickness, was photographed in incident light. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 7.32, page 141.
