Fern fossil. View of the fossilised leaves and stem of the extinct fern Senftenbergia pennae- formis. The leaves are divided into pinnules with the main stem seen at centre. Species of Senften- bergia, such as this one, are known from the European Carboniferous era some 300 million years ago. Senftenbergia is a genus which represents the earliest known form of the Schizaeaceae fern family, with living members of the family now found in tropical or subtropical environments.
