Fern fossil. View of the fossilised leaves and stem of the extinct fern Senftenbergia pennae- formis. The leaves are divided into pinnules with the main stem seen at centre. Species of Senften- bergia, such as this one, are known from the European Carboniferous era some 300 million years ago. Senftenbergia is a genus which represents the earliest known form of the Schizaeaceae fern family, with living members of the family now found in tropical or subtropical environments. This fossil was found in Germany. Magnification: x1 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x2 at 4x5 inch size.
