Caption: Fossilised plants. Fossilised Annularia sp. plants in a rock. Four leaf whorls are seen around a central stem. These are primitive Calamite plants, which were abundant in the upper Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) period, between 315-290 million years ago. These plants covered vast areas of what is now Russia, the USA, China and Europe, living around lakes and swamps. This specimen is from Mazon Creek, Illinois, USA.
