Caption: Petrified logs. Petrifaction is the process by which organic material is fossilized. Here, the logs were rapidly covered by sediment, causing them to decay very slowly. As they decayed, the wood was replaced by silica deposited from ground water, forming a perfect replica of the original wood. Photographed in the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA.
