Caption: Extremes of fossil trilobite size, Agnostus sp, (small), Elrathia sp, (middle) and Paradoxides sp, (large). An extinct group of marine arthropods, the trilobites flourished during the Cambrian period (570 to 510 m.y.) and disappeared from the fossil record in the Permian period (280 to 225 m.y.). They were distributed through all the prehistoric oceans, mostly living on the sea bottom, although some burrowed in sediment and a few were swimmers. Adult trilobites (there were three larval stages) varied in size from 6mm. to 75cm.
