Caption: Two fossil nummulites. Nummulites are large, marine foraminiferans (amoeboid protozoans) with flat spiral shells. The two specimens seen here are approximately 2cm in diameter. Nummulite fossils take their named from their resemblance to coins; nummulus is a Latin word meaning small coin.
