Caption: Neoproterozoic carbonate rocks. Dating from 800 million years ago, these rocks contain some of the oldest fossilised stromatolites in Namibia. A stromatolite is a sedimentary structure formed by the trapping and binding of particles by communities of marine micro-organisms, particularly cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). The weathering is a result of karst topography. This is where rock has layers of variable solubility, allowing for different rates of water erosion. This results in irregular holes, grooves and caves within the rock. Photographed in Namibia.
