Caption: Fossil nummulite shell (Nummulites sp.). This extinct foraminiferan protist inhabited deep marine waters. It dates from the transition between the Eocene and Palaeocene epochs, during which a sudden rise in global temperature led to the mass extinction of many species of bottom-dwelling protists. This specimen measures 22 millimetres in diameter. It is from deposits in Egypt.
