Caption: Palaeontologists searching for amber inside a quarry in Charente-Maritime, France. This region of France contains lower Cretaceous (100 million year old) deposits where amber (fossilised resin from conifer plants) is found in abundance. Most of the amber found here is opaque and requires a powerful X-ray to detect animals or plants that became trapped when the amber first existed as a sticky resin.
