Caption: Fossil fish. Historical illustration of a fossil perch, from a book published in 1835 by the Swiss naturalist Jean Agassiz. This species, Lates gracilis, lived during the Eocene era, 55-38 million years ago. Agassiz was born in 1807. His systematic study of fossil fishes earned him a worldwide reputation as a leading naturalist and scientist - in spite of his outspoken rejection of Darwin's theory of evolution.
